Terms and Definitions
- additive inverse matrix
- For each matrix A, a matrix which
when added to A gives a zero matrix.
- column matrix
- A matrix with one column.
- matrix
- A rectangular array of numbers.
- principal diagonal
- The elements of a square matrix [aij]
where i=j.
- rectangular matrix
- A matrix with unequal numbers of rows and columns.
- row matrix
- A matrix with one row.
- scalar
- A quantity that has only a singie value, its magnitude.
- square matrix
- A matrix with an equal number of rows and columns.
- transpose matrix
- For each matrix A, a matrix which
is formed by interchanging the rows and columns.
- unit matrix
- A square matrix with 1 on the principal diagonal and 0
everywhere else.
- zero matrix
- A matrix with all of its elements 0.
